| The Canberra Preschool Society
(CPS) is the peak community entity for early childhood learning and
care in the ACT. For over 65 years, the Society has provided guidance
and support to its affiliated Group Members, who include Childcare
Parent Groups, Preschool & Playschool Parent Associations (PPAs)
and some Primary School P&Cs on day-to-day administration, parent
participation policy, liaison with the government, training of
volunteers and through the support and provision of an award-winning
financial management software package designed especially for volunteer
treasurers.
The
CPS Council is comprised of both Group and Independent members – who,
once elected by the membership of the CPS, hold a volunteer office for
12 months. These CPS volunteers support the CPS membership through
running general meetings, managing the CPS corporate affairs and
undertaking representation of the preschool community at forums that
affect early childhood and preschool education delivery, content and
outcomes. There is one highly experienced salaried staff member, the
CPS Executive Officer, who supports the CPS Council in their role.
Participation
on the CPS Council is a rewarding and stimulating experience. One that
offers parents the inside view of early childhood care and education
right here in the ACT and the option of learning more about the value
and importance of early childhood care and learning.
The
vision of the CPS is to be a strong, effective voice of the parents of
children aged 5 and under in the ACT. Its belief is that collaborative,
community-based childcare, playgroups, playschools and preschools all:
- offer parents an economical choice in a quality early childhood care and education;
- offer a community-based transition into formal schooling for all children in the ACT;
- provide parents with an opportunity to build and strengthen community networks; and
- provide early access to qualified early childhood educators and development specialists.
| General Meetings of the CPS
| General Meetings are the “business” meetings of the Society providing an opportunity for members to:
- discuss policy direction of Council and approve certain expenditure;
- hear reports of the CPS Executive and other representative bodies;
- receive information and advice, from time to time, from a representative of the Early Childhood Section of the Department of Education and Training;
- receive information from other community groups who share a common interest;
- exchange ideas on fundraising, equipment, parent participation etc.;
- discuss issues raised at Council meetings;
- seek information and guidance about the responsibilities of parent associations; and to
- air any concerns you may have regarding your child’s Preschool education
| Members of the CPS
| Members of the CPS, Delegates (elected to represent a CPS Group Member), Independent Members and Life Members, meet together at the CPS General Meetings. CPS Delegates present their association’s views when necessary. Agendas for each General Meeting are sent via email and/or post approximately 7 days prior to meeting.
CPS delegates are asked to:
- make themselves aware of the views of the Group Member – so that they can be an effective representative and vote in accordance with their associations’ views;
- report back to the Group Member on CPS activities – drawing attention to major issues and matters of interest – an “Issues Paper” is faxed and/or emailed to all CPS Delegates the day after the meeting highlighting the major issues raised at the meeting for your convenience. Minutes from the meeting are emailed and/or posted as soon as possible after each meeting.
- contact the CPS President, Secretary or Executive Officer on matters your Group Member would like placed on the Agenda for discussion at next general meeting; and to
- maintain contact with CPS Executive Officer if you are unable to attend a CPS General Meeting, it is your responsibility to inform your Committee and have another Committee member attend on behalf of your parent association. If no one is able to attend, please ensure apologies are phoned through to the CPS office for recording in the minutes.
