Parent Association Membership
Becoming a member of your
Preschool or Playschool Parent Association is quite simple - it is
through the enrolment of your child into the program for the year. This means, that there is virtually a
complete annual turnover of membership and for each new set of parents a
very steep learning curve about how it all "happens". This
learning-curve is a steep one and the creation of this website is to
assist parents come to know and understand their role.
Preschool
Parent Association began in 1944 and our life is no longer like that
experienced by many in post-war Canberra - it is a reality that for over
75% of children enrolled in an ACT Preschool program that both parents
are working and juggling a young family. So whilst parents automatically
become members of the Preschool Parent Association - that does not mean
that they are available to participate in what has been traditionally
an intensive volunteer-based program.
In 2008 the preschool year became the non-compulsory
first year at each Government primary school. This change supports the
new ACT Curriculum Framework as the Preschool year is the first of four
years called the "Early Childhood Band".
These significant
developments have also afforded the opportunity to change how the ACT
Preschool Parent Association operates and what they are responsible for.
We are keen to ensure that the vital importance of the family early
years network is not lost. Preschools are valued and valuable
community-hubs that are central to the lives of all young families in
the ACT. The Preschool Parent Association is the key to that network. CLICK HERE for more information on Preschool Parent
Association membership
| Frequently Asked Questions.
| Can I stay a member of my Parent Association beyond the year of my child's enrolment? Yes! All Parent Associations have independent membership. This is a very good way to stay involved in your Parent Association and keep up-to-date with all the changes. Many parents have younger children coming "through-the-system". The year between one child's enrolment and that of the nest is called "the gap year". An independent membership with your Preschool Parent Association is particularly useful way to keep in touch with your local preschool community. Over the next couple of years, whilst Preschools work towards a closer more collaborative relationship with the ACT Government Primary School's Parent & Citizen Association things will change and it is important to keep in touch - even if you have chosen to enrol your child into a Non-Government school. | Can I become a member of my child's preschool Parent Association when I hear that they have been offered a place? Yes, contact the CPS Office, let them know the Preschool that your child will attend in the following year. The CPS will pass your contact details to the current Preschool Parent Association management committee. Getting to know your Preschool once you accept your offer of place is a good way to build friendships that last. It will also help you get to know what happens at the local level to support your child's quality preschool education.
