Kingsford Smith Preschool

History
Higgins & Holt Preschool Parent Associations began in 1970.

Higgins & Higgins Preschools opened from January 1971 - shortly after the Preschool Parent Associations reached the financial target as set by the ACT Government of the day.

As the new school Kingsford Smith was constructed to open in 2009 - both Holt and Higgins Preschools and their Parent Associations chose to wind up their 38 year operation and ceased to independently support the ACT Government Preschool Program. Each independent Preschool Parent Association averaged an annual public voluntary contribution to the ACT Government Preschool Program in excess of $3,000. This leads to a total of over $250,000 of public donations to ensure the quality of the program and the day to day running costs of both preschools. This is to be combined with over 30,500 volunteer hours directly aimed at ensuring that each preschool met the Occupational Health and Safety standards through daily cleaning and the strengthening the preschool communities of both Holt and Higgins.

At the close of 2008, the combined assets to the value of more than $180,000 [from both Parent Associations] were donated to Kingsford Smith School. This brought to a close the significant voluntary and fiscal investment made by both of the Holt and Higgins Preschool Parent Associations to the communities of Holt and Higgins and directly to ACT public early childhood education.

Parents of children enrolled in the Kingsford Smith Preschool are now actively involved in the P&C of the Kingsford Smith P-10 School and all efforts are directed to the school to meet the broader needs of the public education of children from 3 years and 9 months through 16 years of age.

Building Community
Whilst most Preschools in the Act are jointly provided through a unique and positive collaboration between each individual Preschool Parent Association and the ACT Government. Kingsford Smith has opted out of this historical collaboration. The ACT Department of Education & Training through School Based Mangement funding to Kingsford Smith P-10 School is completely responsible for the provision and management of the teaching and educational resources and for the day-to-day financial and operational management of all classes within the school.

All parents with enrolled children automatically become members of the School's Parent & Citizen's Association.

Children from Kingsford Smith Preschool may go on to attend either Kingsford Smith P - 10 School or St Thomas Aquinas or St John the Apostle Catholic Primary Schools.
