Harrison Preschool Parent Association

Beginning a history
The Harrison community is one of the newest communities within the ACT. The Harrison school community did not form a Preschool Parent Association.

The Amaroo Preschool Parent Association and Page Preschool Parent Association have supported the Harrison preschool through a significant level of financial and resourcing support.

Harrison Preschool opened January 2008 as an integral part of Harrison Primary School.  The parent and community body, within the school, is affiliated with the Canberra Preschool Society and the ACT Parent and Citizen's Council.

Building Community
With the exception of Harrison, all other Preschools in the Act are jointly provided through a unique and positive collaboration between each individual Preschool Parent Association and the ACT Government.

Harrison school community have chosen to form a single school community that will be affiliated with both the Canberra Preschool Society and the Parents & Citizen's Council.

The Canberra Preschool Society has supported this initiative through its active participation in initial Harrison School community meetings, its direct assistance to the formation of a constitution for a Harrison School community group, and through encouraging the usual generous level of financial support to a new preschool community from other Preschool Parent Associations.

Management of preschool reside entirely within the ACT Harrison government school community. It is different in nature and cannot be described in the same manner as other ACT preschool "units" within the ACT primary school context.

Children from Harrison Preschool may go on to attend either Harrison Primary School or Rosary Catholic Primary School.

Strengthening the Preschool Community
Your participation is valued enormously. There are many ways that you can support your child’s preschool education.

  • Offering to help in the class on a roster basis with small group activities, craft, reading to the children, cooking.
  • Excursions – for all excursions we are required to have 1 adult per 4 children. This means for each excursion we need at least 5 parents to accompany us. As at January 2008, there is no full support of the early childhood family environment. There are no arrangements for appropriate personal accident insurance for your and your preschooler's younger siblings to participate in these exciting adventures! Enquiries should be made to the Harrison school community regarding this matter.
  • Sharing special skills and interests, playing an instrument, pottery, carpentry.
  • Making voluntary financial contributions to aspects of the program, as requested, or through participating in the parent community of the school.
