CPS 65th Birthday
Toward 2020 Review

2013 will mark our 70th birthday!

A Wordpress blogging site that provides you with the opportunity to contribute to the task of mapping the history or the Canberra Preschool Society. We are slowly transcribing, digitising and putting online CPS General Meeting minutes, reports, photos and anything else that fills in the story of Canberra's early childhood story.

Take a moment to explore and find out about what your parents or your grandparents were celebrating or concerned about
throughout their stint on the
Preschool Parent Association Committee or the CPS Council.

Preschools in the ACT: Mapping the history.

In 1943, the Society was commissioned by the Ministry of the Interior to undertake the role of the Canberra Pres-school Advisory Board and the group was not to be representative of the voluntary local committees, but to be comprised of members who were selected for their specialised knowledge of the work.  Their functions were to:

  • advise the Department on general policy;
  • to assist the Department to set up appropriate standards for all branches of pre-school work including staff, buildings, equipment, playgrounds;
  • to advise the Department on the registration of local groups;
  • to examine and make recommendations to the Department for subsidies to local committees;
  • to maintain supervision, through departmental channels, of all pre-school development;
  • to advise the Department on the issue of publications in the form of leaflets, brochures, etc., and
  • to act as a channel of communication between voluntary local committees and the Department.

A little more than 10 years later the “Canberra Nursery Kindergarten Society” changed their name to the “Canberra Preschool Society”.  The stated reason:

"In recent years the nature of the Society’s work has altered, and the scope has been enlarged.  With the closing of the Nursery School, there is now no Nursery Kindergarten in Canberra, and the pre-school play centres are increasing yearly.  Sixteen facilities are now registered with the Department of the Interior ... at a general meeting of the Society on July 12th, the name Canberra Pre-School Society was unanimously approved."
